15. Freeland
All areas of South Whidbey are special, but none are more unique in history and location than the vibrant village of Freeland. Anchored between two accessible beaches, little more than a mile apart.
Freeland's bustling business center boasts five banks. Visitors will find a shopping plaza, restaurants, gourmet grocery and deli, gift, thrift, andtiques and a fitness center.
A short stroll leads to Freeland Park on Holmes Harbor with a handy boat launch. Walk the beach, bring a shovel for clam digging and enjoy the picnic and playgrounds. Along with summer family events, the annual 3rd of July celebration and spectacular fireworks display are not to be missed!
Perched there on a scenic hillside is the historic Freeland Hall, built in 1914. This fine old building is still used for parties, family reunions, arts and craft shows and lovely country waterfront weddings.
Bordering beautiful Holmes Harbor is Holmes Harbor Golf and Beach Club. This par three executive course is open to the public.
Sorrounded by Freeland's many recreation areas is a selection of fine choices for lodging tucked near the beaches, meadows and forested country sides.
On Freeland's west side is Double Bluff Park with two miles of sandy beach to roam. Find a shell and watch for sea creatures, birds or maybe a passing whale. This beach is also leash free for your dog.
A short drive from downtown is South Whidbey State Park. This lush old growth forest hosts secluded camping spots, hiking trails and a wide pristine shoreline. The tidelands are a haven for exploration or... just be spellbound as you watch a glorious sunset sink over the Olympic Mountains.
